Fragrance 201

Meltmyscents- David Weymouth

In an earlier blog, Fragrance 101, I discussed the basics of the scent pyramid, with top, mid and bottom notes.  In an effort to describe how we build fragrances (or balance fragrance notes within a scent pyramid) I thought I would discuss how this process was applied in the creation of Eskimo Kiss, a popular Scentsy Fall/Winter fragrance.  For most people, myself included, it helps when dominant fragrance notes are called out to help you identify what you think you smell.  This exercise will likely be more meaningful if you have a new bar of Eskimo Kiss nearby.  If not, you’ll have to use your imagination…

It’s official! I can FINALLY share what Scentsy will be launching into next:

Sincerely Scent Online Card Store

On March 1, Scentsy will launch an innovative product line extension: an online greeting card store featuring over 150 original, customizable, SCENTED greeting cards. You and your customers will be able to order cards online and have them delivered to the recipients’ addresses without buying stamps or going to the post office. You can 77personalize cards with a customized message, your favorite photo, a digital signature, AND a scent sample from the Scentsy Favorites collection. That’s right–each card will be mailed with a sample infused with Scentsy fragrance, allowing the recipient to experience Scentsy as soon as they open the envelope. There are cards for every occasion, from birthdays and anniversaries to holidays. Cards can be ordered through my website. Cards are purchased with credits, which are available in bundles  of 10, 25, or 100. One card equals one credit, and includes postage. Each card costs $2.85 (USD) / $3.82 (CAD).

Scentsy fragrance products are worry-free

Scentsy’s concern for the health and safety of our customers, Consultants and community is paramount. That’s why only the highest-quality ingredients available for all of our products.

Scentsy fragrances comply with the International Fragrance Association’s (IFRA) Code of Practices

Scentsy fragrance products are specially formulated and tested to comply with all federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations, the IFRA’s Code of Practice, the European Union’s REACH requirements and the California Air Resources Board regulations — third-party organizations that conduct rigorous testing on our products to help ensure they’re safe for you to use. All of these groups restrict the use of fragrance ingredients that pose a risk to consumer health or the environment. Yay! We also require the fragrance houses we work with to be active members of the IFRA. The IFRA determines which ingredients are safe and at what levels, by product.

A few years ago, if someone had asked me whether I preferred synthetic to essential oils, I would have assumed they were discussing the kind of motor oil I used in my car.  Today, the questions of synthetic and essential oils are always fragrance specific.  At Scentsy we use both.  More specifically, Scentsy fragrances typically contain a mixture of natural and synthetic fragrance oils.  The argument that “synthetics aren’t as good as natural (oils)” is, from my perspective, a myth.

There is a laundry list of reasons why, but without synthetic fragrance oils our fragrance options would be highly limited—unless we were comfortable with mass deforestation or the unrestrained use of limited or endangered resources.  Not to mention the financial costs of those resources.  Musk notes are a great example, as “natural” musk oils are not distributed within the fragrance industry as a whole (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musk).  If it wasn’t for synthetic fragrance oils, the Siberian Musk Deer (and many other similar animals) would likely be extinct.  However, not all synthetic oils are created equal—so we still have the challenge (and fun) of identifying the right raw material.

Scentsy Pink Pepper the ScentTREND for 2012

ScentTREND 20121Meridian, Idaho (January 4, 2012) – Scentsy, Inc., a growing international leader in fragrance, today announced Pink Pepper as the ScenTrend™ for 2012. Based on evaluation and trend analysis by fragrance experts at Scentsy and prominent international fragrance houses, the ScenTrend designation identifies the up-and-coming fragrance note for the new year, which consumers will find in home as well as fine fragrances. A study in contrasts, Pink Pepper’s multidimensional nature exudes sweet, floral yet spicy aromas, giving it appeal as both a gourmand and romance fragrance note. Distilled from the rose-hued berries of the Peruvian pepper tree and used as a spice in cooking, Pink Pepper has a dry, fresh scent with hints of angelica and juniper-like notes. This bold yet warm fragrance stimulates renewed energy in any environment.

“Pink Pepper fits the mood of our time,” explains Heidi Thompson, President of Scentsy, Inc. “It’s a spirited fragrance note that offers inspiration to find adventure, be romantic or simply add a touch of excitement to any aspect of life. We’re pleased to highlight Pink Pepper’s inspiring personality in Scentsy’s home fragrances.”

Tom Pastre, President of Creatique, a fragrance industry consulting firm in Cresskill, New Jersey, said selecting a fragrance note of the year shows Scentsy’s passion for the art of fragrance creation and perfumery. “Pink Pepper is appropriate for these challenging times because it’s uplifting and has a certain optimism to it. It’s bold and zesty, but has a warmth that’s comforting,” said Pastre. “It’s the contrasts that make it exciting: feminine and floral, yet sexy and exotic.”

Fragrance lovers can experience the contrasts of Pink Pepper in Pixie, Scentsy’s February 2012 Scent of the Month.Pixie is a mischievous moonscape of pink pepper, mandarin and heliotrope deepened by exotic teakwood and vanilla oak. Scentsy’s Spring/Summer 2012 Catalog highlights fragrances containing Pink Pepper, and for those interested in designing their own signature scents with ScenTrend 2012, Pink Pepper will also be available as a stand-alone Scentsy Bar—ideal for mixing.

Scentsy developed its expertise in identifying and defining fragrance trends through detailed analysis and evaluation of hundreds of fragrance notes, raw materials and finished scents. The company’s high-quality fragrances have received an overwhelmingly positive response from consumers since Scentsy’s start in 2004.
